Bid to close the North-South skills gaps

Inspectors have urged the Northern Powerhouse to target school improvement after a report revealed a 'troubling' North-South divide in education. Findings from Ofsted showed under-performing schools were 'concentrated' in the North and the Midlands. Out of the 16 councils where less than 60% of local children attend a good or outstanding secondary school and have lower than average attainment and progress at GCSE, 13 are in the North or the Midlands.
