If new homes being built by Lambeth LBC are among the last council houses to be built in the UK, then council housing is finishing on a very high note. The development shatters all preconceptions about 'social housing', and shows how a council, working with the local community, can build homes which the private sector would be proud of. The 18 new flats are one of the final parts of a seven-year regeneration project. They will not only provide excellent accommodation for local people, but also present a new 'face' of the area for thousands of people who pass by it, every day, along the busy Brixton Road. These homes were part of the original masterplan for the area's regeneration, which attracted Estate Action Funds. Because of this, the council has been able to stick to the plan of building, and then managing the flats itself. Most of the money has come from the Estate Action 'pot', with additional funds from the council's housing capital budget. Boatemah Walk is a far cry from the homes it is replacing.
