Public Has The Right To Opt For Mayoral System

The article headlined 'Changing the rules just isn't fair play' by George Jones and Jon Stewart (The MJ, 5 March) presented a very negative overview of the directly elected mayoral system. As you chose to illustrate the article with my photograph, yet failed to mention North Tyneside at all, can I take this opportunity to explain why local government must be open to any changes that allow their own communities to use their voice and press for an elected mayoral system. This democratic approach should not be just an option for people with support from an established and organised group - but open to any groups of individuals who share ideas and vision for their own area and want a leader that can work with them and their partners outside the traditional system.
