When everyone can overcome the difficulties of this year's budget pressures, the recession and the impact of weather on our services, there may be more of an opportunity to create the time required for some longer-term thinking. Here at Stratford on Avon, it rather goes without saying that we benefit from having a rich, cultural heritage. And even though there have been significant impacts from the economic downturn on tourism, there are several important events in coming years which might well reverse these effects. Next year, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre will reopen its main theatre after major refurbishment. We, together with our partners, are trying to ensure the public realm matches the new theatre - a major challenge in itself. In 2012, with the Olympics and Paralympics Games being staged in Stratford, east London, there will be a huge influx of visitors to our district on the back of the 'greatest show on earth', and we must be ready to provide part of the 'cultural Olympiad'. However, it is likely with preparations for training camps and other facilities, we will see increases in visitors during 2011.
