The TUC has voted unanimously in favour of a 'national day of action' on 30 November, which could see as many as three million public sector workers go on strike. The strikes, which are likely to be the biggest since the General Strike of 1926, result from anger at the planned pension contribution increases for public sector staff, as well as deep unhappiness with the Government's plans for cuts to spending on public services. It is understandable that public sector workers feel angry and frustrated at the cuts being made to the organisations they work for and the services they help to provide. However, polls indicate that there remains widespread public acceptance of the need to reduce spending. And this argument cannot be won by simply downing tools.
