The recent Department for Work and Pensions release, detailing its preferred major contractors - prime providers - for the Work Programme proved interesting reading. With almost 300 voluntary sector organisations involved in delivering the programme, the headline looked promising for significant sector involvement. However, on closer inspection, only one-third of sector organisations explicitly made it as a prime provider. This means the ability of the sector to ensure the Work Programme's success as sub-contractors will now hinge on intelligent supply chain management by the prime providers.
