I often wonder whether other district chief executives question whether all our discussions, strategic meetings and new initiatives are really making a difference to the communities we serve. It seems so easy to lose sight of the things that really matter and how applying the 'KIS' (Keeping it Simple) theory may in fact reap greater benefits. Recently, I was privileged to go 'back to the floor' with colleagues on Rushcliffe BC's Recycling2Go team, followed swiftly by a day on Streetwise, delivering street cleansing and grounds maintenance. This experience reminded me of the fact that we can develop metrics, systems and processes until the cows come home, but this will never take away the experience of witnessing first-hand the interaction that many of our frontline staff have on a daily basis. It highlighted the importance of routine services which maintain the fabric of our society and, in particular, the effect a discussion with elderly people - who recognise our staff- can have.
