Government 'failed to learn lessons' of PCC elections, says watchdog

Voting watchdogs have hit out at the Home Office over its failure to heed the lessons from last November's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections - which were beset by a poor 15% turnout. The trenchant condemnation follows publication on 12 December of the Government's official response to an Electoral Commission report into the inaugural polls. Released in March, the watchdog's report said Home Office ministers 'mistakenly' assumed the very act of holding the first-ever PCC elections would be enough to inspire a strong turnout at the polls.
