This Christmas and New Year saw extraordinary bad weather with high winds and heavy rain causing floods & misery across the UK. Many people were left flooded & without power for days. Our government is constantly singing the praises of the private sector and plays down the valuable - and in many cases, vital - role of local government. The latest storms and flooding appear to indicate that the private sector was unable or unwilling to rise to the challenge, with power down for days and many people suffering personal loss where insurance companies refuse to insure properties. It was once again left to local government to offer their residents support and pick up the pieces through their emergency plans.
