The Core Cities will need 'more than just crumbs' from the Spending Review if they are to deliver economic growth, the leader of Newcastle City Council has claimed. Speaking at the Core Cities conference in London last week, Cllr Nick Forbes claimed that, despite a shift towards devolution, 'virtually every penny of public expenditure' in the UK goes through the Treasury - a system he suggested was hindering investment in economic growth at a local level. He told the conference: "The Core Cities are expecting more than just bigger crumbs from the CSR. This is a chance for fundamental re-engineering of our economic and public finance structures.' Cllr Forbes claimed austerity in the last Parliament had 'choked off growth' and delayed recovery.
