The £200m public health cut says early intervention is unimportant

Last week's announcement of a £200m cut in the public health budget will have nil effect on the public finances but is far more indicative of the Government's cavalier approach to local government and to its persistent Whitehall silo-mentality. Total public spending for this year is around £743bn, so a cut of £200m represents about a third of 0.1%, something equivalent to the Treasury of a few coins lying about in the bottom of the kitchen drawer.
