Figures were recently released showing how much councils are spending on obesity. For the period from 2013/14 to 2016/17, the total amount spent is set to surpass half a billion pounds. While this shows how committed councils are to tackling obesity, it also underlines the huge challenge we are facing. Today one in four adults is obese, compared to 15% in 1993. During 2016/17 councils expect to spend £127m -down on £140m in 2015/16. This is an early example of how the recent cuts by government to its public health grants are already having an impact on councils' ability to tackle major conditions such as obesity.
