The dawn of a new millennium inspired me to steer my career in a new direction. Having spent 29 years in permanent employment in local government, I decided to launch myself into interim management hoping to enjoy some new challenges and some longer holidays. Two weeks after receiving my presentation pen, I started my first job as an interim executive director at Basildon DC during a reorganisation of the management team. Although I had developed skills as a permanent manager, I quickly realized the need for new skills as an interim manager. No time to get your feet under the desk, you must be up and running straight away. Initially I was unsure of my role, illustrating the need to set clear objectives of what is expected of an interim manager and to make realistic targets for what is achievable within the time scale.
