Cut pay and red tape before charity cash, says PM

Local government should cut its pay and management teams before cutting grants to the voluntary sector, David Cameron urged this week. In a speech on the Big Society, the prime minister said: 'Local authorities do have a choice about how they reduce their budgets, and we are saying to them as vigorously as we can, please will you make sure you cut your own bureaucracies and your pay, before you cut voluntary bodies and charities.' But, he added: 'I cannot order every local authority what to do with their budget but what I can do is actually give local people a tool that they have never had before, and that is transparency.'
