Whistle-blowing carers 'need extra protection'

Extra protection is needed for whistle-blowers in the care system according to a report from an influential group of MPs. The warning from the health select committee was published as human rights experts warned some care users received treatment comparable with 'torture'. MPs reported on 7 March 'there is an essential public interest in ensuring that professionals are protected against punitive action when they raise concerns about professional standards'. Earlier this week, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) released a report claiming some health and social care users in England and Wales had received 'abusive, cruel and degrading treatment... similar to torture'.
