The DCLG has said it is 'disingenuous and wrong' for Rochdale MBC to claim the authority could increase council tax levels by 3.5% this year without triggering a vote by local taxpayers. Local and national newspapers this week reported that Rochdale plans to use the Localism Act to exclude hikes to waste and transport bills from its headline-rate council tax increase. Current DCLG rules state that councils planning to increase their council tax base by 2% could be forced to hold a local referendum on the issue.
