DHP accusations denied by councils

Councils have rejected an MP's claim that they are holding on to money for discretionary housing payments (DHPs) to 'fit their narrative'. Stephen Lloyd, Lib Dem MP for Eastbourne, made the suggestion at a Work and Pensions select committee hearing, but Cllr Sharon Taylor, chair of the Local Government Association finance panel, said it was 'extremely unlikely that councils would do that'. Cllr Taylor insisted DHP was 'very underfunded' and councils were 'doing everything they can to support their communities through a very difficult time'.
