As can be seen from this current edition of Health MJ, news about the financial health of the NHS is not exactly optimistic. The picture, laid out by the various studies, is more gloomy than the experience of most hospital patients whose admiration for the dedication of doctors and nurses and the quality of their care remains undimmed. As NHS England's figures for July showed (see p1), more patients are being treated, making the UK one of the best performers of western nations. And just to offset some of the more alarmist analyses of NHS finances comes a report from The Nuffield Trust saying fee NHS can still be funded through general taxation.
