Birmingham may drop criminal record checks

The council at the centre of the Trojan Horse scandal is expected to ditch three-year criminal record checks, sparking fresh safeguarding fears. Birmingham City Council told The MJ that, from July, it would only undertake Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks or new employees. It comes three years after Birmingham was heavily criticised as part of the Trojan Horse affair, in which some Birmingham-based Muslim groups were accused of plotting to install governors at schools. At the time local public bodies were criticised for failing to ensure that key individuals had undergone criminal record checks.
