Plans are being drawn up that will give councils more of a say in where asylum seekers are accommodated. The Local Government Association (LGA) and the Home Office are holding meetings to develop a plan to create a 'fair and equitable asylum dispersal system' but they warned it would 'not be achieved on day one of the new contract'. Talks were spurred by the awarding of new contracts to provide housing for new arrivals as they await decisions on asylum applications. Glasgow City Council, Hillingdon LBC and Greater Manchester Combined Authority have warned that high concentrations of asylum seekers in their areas were increasing demand for services and leading to financial pressures. They appealed for changes to the dispersal system to ensure asylum seekers were more evenly spread across the country.
