A police officer with the West St. Paul Police Department who ended a hostage confrontation at a bank, in the process saving a fellow officer who was being held at gunpoint, has been named the 2008 Minnesota Police Officer of the Year by the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association.rnSgt. Ronald Brent Nagel, a fourteen-year veteran of the department, responded on May 10, 2007, to an "ambush alarm" at the Retail Employees Credit Union in West St. Paul. Prior to his arrival, three other officers had first answered the call. An armed individual confronted them, pointing his loaded Ruger 9mm pistol at one officer in order to take him hostage.
