The steering column in a Mini is fitted with two bushes, one at the top just under the steering wheel and one at the bottom of the inner column, down by the pedals. In early Minis both bushes were made of fe these worked well when new but as soon as they became worn or dried-out, play would manifest in the steering column. In an attempt to overcome this,'the top bush was superseded by a nylon bush; this improved matters but the lower felt bush still wore out - in as little as 10,000 miles. Typically, it took until approximately 1984 before they fitted nylon bushes top and bottom. A Mini with worn Bushes will have up and down play in the column and often a heavy rattle on idle. Bush replacement is an instant and transforming cure.
