When the Moke went on sale in January 1964 it was marketed as a utilitarian vehicle that cost £405. By the time that The Prisoner went into production, in 1967, it had found a new role as a prop car for a swinging era. The Moke's coachwork meant that a hard-pressed cameraman could keep the principle actors in shot during a long take, even if they did run the risk of falling out of the sides or, for winter filming sessions, developing hypothermia.rn1967 was also the year that the VAT man decided that the Moke wasn't actually a 'commercial vehicle' but by then its early role as a commercial hack was fast becoming forgotten in the face of its new 'swinging '60s' identity. Crayford Engineering, seeing a market, decided to produce a limited number of canvas-roofed 'Surrey-topped' models for use as hotel taxis in France and the Caribbean. Some 20 examples were produced but the Surrey Moke's fame now almost entirely derives from The Prisoner.
