We left off last issue with a bespoke twin-motorbike-throttle-body set-up and a Canems ECU rigged up to Sheldon's tuned 1014oc A-series. The set-up's aim was to improve peak torque and bhp figures while also maintaining (or even improving) low-down power - a goal that is often compromised by the carburettor and camshaft choice. There's also the bonus of reducing the number of moving parts subject to wear so that, once set up, an engine is less likely to go out of tune. At a club dyno day or down the pub, peak bhp is king. But in reality, the average Mini owner will rarely make use of the peak power high up in the rev range, hence why aftermarket engine management systems have become so appealing. But if fuel injection is apparently so much better than a carb, why has it not been utilised by every Mini tuner? That largely comes down to cost, and perhaps a wish for originality.
