As with the previous rally-inspired Mini Cooper Monte Carlo, things weren't particularly inspiring under the bonnet, with a mildly uprated SPi 1275 engine only pushing out around B3bhp, John Cooper Garages took in five of the 200 UK cars and converted them to S-spec. Three of these cars are known to survive. They feature a more modified engine, pushed to the limits of the Rover MEMS ECU at 86bhp, an oil cooler, Janspeed exhaust, green rocker cover and a conversion plaque. The roofs were re-sprayed in Old English White and twin bonnet stripes continued over the scuttle panel in a nod to the original Cooper race Minis. The interiors feature a lighter-coloured elm dashboard and additional trimmings, plus stainless steel sill covers, alloy door furniture and racy steering wheel. If you find Ken Reed's Cooper 35 LE S at the shows, see if you can find some other differences, too, there are quite a few small detail changes to distinguish it from the standard models.
