Out of a total entry of 105 cars taking part in this event from 11-13 September, nine were in the Pre-1967 historic class and five of these were Minis, two having travelled from Japan. Crews were tackling 24 closed road special stages, totalling 166 miles, over three days and two nights. After Shinobu and Hiroko Kitani damaged their car on the first stage in Douglas, a three-way battle developed between the Manx Racing Mini of Mervyn Johnston/Wendy Blackledge, Peter Horsburgh/Graham Carter in the Mini Spares Mini and the BHRC championship crew of Clive King/Bob Ward, all in Mk1 Cooper Ss. Each would claim fastest times on different stages until Clive blew a cylinder head gasket, leading to retirement after stage 11. Mervyn had a slow puncture on stage 5, costing 20 seconds. The battle was still very close and he was only a minute adrift after 23 stages, before the final and longest stage: the 13.3 mile "Classic", starting in Druidale and finishing in Douglas at the TT Grandstand. Despite Mervyn beating 277 BRX by 30 seconds, Peter in the Mini Spares Cooper S held on to finish best Mini and third in the pre-1967 Historic class behind two Porsche 911s. Both Japanese crews finished for the first time, including the Mk1 Cooper of Yoshinao Tsuchiya (Mr Smooth)/Yashiro Maeda.
