Like other secondary fiber procurement managers, Steve Koehler of U.S. Gypsum has seen mill technology at his company widen his buying options. Because of cleaning systems installed at the company's seven paper mills, U.S. Gypsum is using much less double lined kraft (DLK) and a lot more of a cheaper furnish, old corrugated containers (OCC). "We do use other grades such as flyleaf," he added. This downgrade of furnish does not, however, lessen his need for quality. "A big challenge is that the quality of the fiber we buy must meet our requirements," Koehler told members of the New Jersey Paper Recycling Association meeting in Clifton late last month.
