Plans to lift the Over-Thirty-Months Scheme offers opportunities for British dairy farmers, as well as the country's beef producers, says Tom Hind, and it will allow everybody to be proud of their international reputation again. When the government announced in December last year that subject to certain conditions the Over-Thirty-Months Scheme (OTMS) could be lifted, one could almost sense a palpable rejoicing among livestock and dairy farmers. The scheme, which removes cattle older than 30 months from the food chain, is one of the last remaining controls that illustrate the British BSE problem - and the consequent stigma that has gone with it since the mid-1990s.
