The Dairy Council held its annual Ceremony of the Christmas Cheeses at The Royal Hospital, Chelsea, on 7 December, heralding the start of the festive celebrations for the nation's favourite pensioners. In a tradition that originally started in 1692, British cheesemakers donated more than 250kg of cheese to the much loved war veterans, resplendent in their bright scarlet tunics. This year, Sandy Wilkie, Chairman of the Dairy Council, presented the cheeses and spoke of his pride at the fact that, despite the economic downturn, the Great British public have consumed more cheese than in previous years.
