The book revolves around Randall Baxter, who developed a radio program in which he interviewed many WWII veterans, using transcripts of nearly a dozen of those for use in this volume. The transcripts were edited to some degree, but insufficiently. Brief dramatic passages are included that give the reader visions of violent, dangerous combat of low-ranking soldiers and naval personnel during significant campaigns in both the European and Pacific theaters of combat.
