Germany's new Defence Minister, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, visited the NATO Headquarters in Brussels on 31 July for the first time since she was appointed as the new political leader of the German Ministry of Defence. The Minister was welcomed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg who praised Germany's efforts to strengthen the Atlantic Alliance in the past few years. Mr. Stoltenberg said to the new Defence Minister: "Germany has been for many years a staunch supporter of the Alliance and contributed in many different ways. Germany leads the NATO battle group in Lithuania, you are one of the lead nations in Afghanistan, and you participate in NATO maritime operations and in many other missions and activities including Kosovo in the Balkans."
