摘要

A major shift has been quietly occurring in the design of combat vehicles over the past several decades. It reflects a move from manned to unmanned or remote weapon stations, commonly referred to as Remote Weapon Stations (RWS). Manned stations ranging from simple manually-operated open weapon stations to fully enclosed one- or two-crew powered turrets with sophisticated optics and fire controls are increasingly being replaced by stations in which the operator is entirely separated from the weapon, ammunition and sights. This arrangement has been made possible through advances in electronics and digitalization, particularly cameras, processing and data distribution, including networking. An indication of the size of the growth in the use of the RWS was provided by Scott Burk, Vice President of US Business Development for Kongsberg Land Systems, who explained that Kongsberg alone "has over the last 12 years manufactured and fielded nearly 20,000 systems to 23 countries worldwide."
