An overview of how the Australian Defence Force is undergoing a complete overhaul of its equipment that will transform its capabilities over the next 20 years into those comparable with a major European power. The Australian Defence Force's (ADF) modernisation effort is is based on the assumptions contained in the Defence White Paper of 2016, which seeks to secure increased engagement in the region and globally in response to the challenge presented by China: it is supported by an increase in defence spending from 1.9% to 2% of GDP in the coming years. Defence expenditure is set at just over $26 billion (A$36 billion) for 2018-19.
