As industry sources confirmed to MT, the most significant upgrades in handgun technology currently being implemented by the world's most mature armed forces focus on enhancements in accessories as well as modularity. Options currently on the market in these areas include the addition of suppressors; tactical aiming lights and laser designators; weapon sights; and modular handgrips, the latter designed to enhance marksmanship and comfort levels of users. Despite these upgrades, handgun design and calibre selection remain relatively unchanged, with armed forces opting to focus on the procurement of standard and compact weapon sizes. Compact weapons, as an example, are optimised for more covert and discreet operations. Additionally, armed forces around the world appear unlikely to stray from a continuing preference for 9×19mm calibre ammunition, rather than larger and heavier .40- and .45-cal rounds, which can significantly affect the size and weight of handguns as well as increasing the physical burden for users.
