An independent service since 6 March 1918, the Finnish Air Force (FINAF) is one of the oldest Air Forces in the world. Throughout its illustrious history, the mission of the FINAF has been the protection of Finland. During the Second World War, the service primarily concentrated on defensive fighter operations, and the majority of the FINAF aircraft inventory has consistently comprised fighters.rnThe main peacetime tasks of the FINAF are air policing and training. Finland shares over 1,300km of border with Russia, and this border also forms a stretch of the eastern border of the EU. In a time of crisis, the main task of the FINAF would be defensive counter-air operations to protect Army and Navy units as well as civilian infrastructure and other assets of the nation.
