An ancient sage of war once said that the most effective course of action is to attack the enemy's strategy. On 1 December 2009, at a speech at the US Military Academy at West Point, NY, President Barack Obama declared the strategic approach that the US would execute in the ongoing war in Afghanistan. His decision, after a painfully long 90-day decision-making process, was to affirm General Stanley McChrys-tal's counterinsurgency (COIN) approach to counter the Taliban and al-Qaida in Afghanistan.
