Visualisation Systems Play a Vital Role in Training

Every day we see stunning examples of computer graphics on television, on advertising boards, on screens and in shop windows. The systems that produce this imagery have been developed for the media, commercial and advertising areas, but can they also be used for training? This is probably so for basic training aids such as desktop and some "flat screen" trainers. However, training devices vary in complexity from simple laptop-based systems up to Full Flight Simulators (FFS) for airliners and Full Mission Simulators (FMS) for the military. The various world civil aviation regulatory authorities (the FAA in the US, EASA in Europe etc) closely define the characteristics of the FFS, whereas the design of a military FMS is up to the operator concerned and depends on the operator's perspective and knowledge of training technology, which vary considerably across the military services of the world. Below the FFS/FMS level, where the real equipment is complex and expensive, it will be cost-effective to have some intermediate training devices to prepare the trainee for more expensive devices such as the FFS/FMS and, of course, for operating the equipment itself.
