Consumerism, Theology, and Christian Leadership: The Vital Role that Pastors Play in Combating Consumerism

This thesis explores the critically important role that pastors play in combating American consumerism in the lives of Christians and the church. It does this by first looking at consumerism and its elements. It must be demonstrated that consumerism is problematic not only for individuals in society but also for the church. After highlighting the issues posed by consumerism and its elements (i.e. avarice, discontentment, detachment, and identity), the thesis will then seek to establish an appropriate biblical response to these elements. With this response in mind, the thesis will then turn its focus to pastors. A chapter will be devoted to highlighting the important part pastors have in combating consumerism. The chapter discusses how pastors should view their role in the fight against consumerism (e.g. public theologian). The thesis ends with practical steps that pastors can begin to implement immediately.
