After the downfall of the Ottoman Empire, a secret agreement was signed between the government of the UK and France defining their spheres of influence and control in Western Asia. It was largely a trade agreement with a large area set aside for indirect control through an Arab State or a confederation of Arab States. Britain was allocated control of areas roughly comprising today's Jordan, southern Iraq, and a small area around Haifa. France was allocated control of south-eastern Turkey, northern Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.
