摘要

India has revamped a number of tenders to suit its newly-launched 'Make in India' programme to encourage indigenous weapons and aircraft manufacturing. India's previously stagnant defence establishment, which was scattered with delays and scams, is now exhibiting an upward trend since Narendra Modi took charge as Prime Minister in May 2014. Following a 49% hike from the previous 26% in FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) in defence production in July 2014, the government launched the 'Make in India' campaign in October 2014 as part of a new policy encouraging the local defence industry to meet the Indian Army's needs quickly and effectively. Under the new policy, about half of India's total weapons requirement for the next decade (worth approximately $100 billion) could be developed indigenously.
