An Evolving Giant -The Japanese Defence Industrial Complex

Japanese foreign and defence policy is in the midst of a dramatic process of change, with Japan's political leadership moving towards a much more assertive strategy in terms foreign and defence affairs. From the perspective of Tokyo becoming more assertive is essential due to the complex and rapidly evolving strategic situation in Asia, due to this they believe they can no longer rely on outsourcing their primary foreign and defence policy interests to foreign powers, principally the US. In these circumstances to understand how the Japanese defence industry is evolving we first need to reference Japan's broader security situation.
