De titel op de voorkant van dit boek zou de lezer kunnen misleiden. De ware inhoud blijkt namelijk pas uit de ondertitel op pagina iii: The Triumph of the West. De Cambridge Illustrated History of Warfare is dan ook geen encyclopedisch werk dat de geschiedenis van oorlogvoering wereldwijd en door de eeuwen heen behandelt. Al in het voorwoord blijkt wat de schrijvers eigenlijk willen betogen: 'for good or ill over the past two cen-rnturies the western way of war has become dominant all over the World. In the nineteenth and twen-tieth centuries remarkably few sta-tes and cultures managed to resist western arms for long - and the few that did so usually succeeded by imitation or adaptation'.
