A New Role for Army Reserves

Prior to Sept. 11, 2001, the Army National Guard and Army Reserve functioned as a strategic reserve. However, multiple deployments in the past two decades have necessitated the transformation of the Army reserve components into an operational force.rnThe chief of staff of the Army directed this transformation, Army Initiative 4 (AI4), based on a Commission on the National Guard and Reserves report issued Jan. 11, 2008. The AI4 task force was established in February 2008 to manage the effort.
