According to Civil War expert Thomas Cartwright, "These were the two bloodiest acres of the Civil War," describing the 1864 Battle of Franklin, about 25 miles south of Nashville, Tenn. Cartwright is a guide at the Carter House, a National Historical Landmark that still shows bullet holes from the battle. "This battle spelled the end of the Confederacy," he says. "The casualties were 9,000 in five hours. Fifteen generals were lost."
