As supreme commander of the armed forces, the president of Sudan exercises all military authority. He is also commander in chief of the armed forces and the country's minister of defense. The Defense and Security Council serves directly under the president and has sweeping powers. It has authority not only over defense matters but also over economic and political issues that have defense or security implications.
