As established by the Constitution, the president is commander in chief of the military. The president appoints Cabinet-level officials - namely ministers of defense, interior, and anti-narcotics, as well as the national security adviser. This authority extends over five Afghan National Army (ANA) corps, which are headquartered in Kabul (Central Corps), Gardez (Eastern Corps), Herat (Western Corps), Kandahar (Southern Corps), and Mazar-i-Sharif (Northern Corps). The five corps are led by a two-tier leadership consisting of a high command and the general staff commands of the ANA and ANA Air Corps.
