Chile exportedrn4.084 million mt of copper in the first nine months of the year, down 4.4% from 4.271 million mt in the same period last year, state copper agency Cochilco said November 21. The total included 2.173 million mt of cathode, down 3.1% from 2.242 million mt a year earlier; 1.61 million mt of copper in concentrate, down 4.2% from 1.68 million mt in 2007, and 301,500 mt of blister, down 13.8%. The sharpest falls in copper exports were seen at state copper giant Codelco (down 14.2% to 1.423 million mt), BHP Billiton-controlled Escondida (down 11.3% to 946,000 mt) and Anglo American's Andes Sur division (down 16.1% to 153,200 mt), offset by higher production at Xstrata Copper (up 37% to 144,000 mt), BHP's Spence mine (up 45.1% to 126,500 mt) and Antofagasta Minerals' Los Pelambres mine (up 33.4% to 297,800 mt). China accounted for 20%, or 1.132 million mt, of Chile's copper exports during the period followed by Japan (13% or 736,000 mt), and South Korea and the US (with 7.5% each), the report said.
