Determination of the class for an l-section with equal flanges according to Eurocode 3

According to Eurocode 3, the class of a section should be determined prior to the verification of the resistance under bending or bending and axial force. In particular, the class of the web depends on the forces applied to the section. It should be determined by assuming either its plastic resistance or its elastic resistance being reached. For the designer, a difficulty then arises to switch from the design forces resultingfrom the global analysis of the structure to the forces corresponding to one of these limit states. This paper deals with the case commonly encountered in practice of a doubly symmetrical l-section, subjected to an axial force and a bending moment about its strong axis. Various options are being examined and the recommendations given in this paper have been taken up in the recommendations of the French standardisation committee in orderto facilitate the application of the standard.
