In the early 1940s the No. 1 Process (Fig. 1) of electrostatic paint application was developed. This process used existing air-atomized spray technology that was developed in the late 1800s and incorporated an electrostatically charged grid constructed of piano wire. The grid was used to produce an ionized field of electrostatically charged particles. The air atomized guns sprayed into this field through which the articles being coated also passed. The electrostatic charge was imposed on the atomized paint particles. These particles were then attracted to the product being coated, which was at ground potential.
