In 1933, an organization called The Academic Assistance Council (AAC) was set up with the purpose of finding places in British universities for scientists and other scholars in Germany whose livelihoods and lives were coming under increasing threat from the Nazis. A few years later, it became The Society for the Protection of Science and Learning (SPSL) and more recently, in 2000, it changed to its current name, Council for Assisting Refugee Academics (CARA). This book celebrates the 75th anniversary of CARA's life. It also charts the very mixed fortunes of refugees coming to this country over the period, both those helped by CARA and others.
